Following the UK government's announcement of a social media ban for under-16s (June 2026), I was invited by the Science Media Centre to comment on the UK Government's proposed restrictions. Drawing on my research conducted with young people as co-researchers, I argued that policymakers should focus on regulating age-appropriate features of AI systems (e.g., limiting anthropomorphic and engagement-maximizing characteristics), while investing in AI literacy and young people's capacity to engage critically with emerging technologies.
